Leave Your Bucket Behind The story of the women at the well holds a special place of meaning. You may have heard its portrayal as a promiscuous woman who was shacking up with her boyfriend after having several failed marriages. Then she meets a man who sees her differently and is set free from her sigma and reputation and goes on to change her city. Each time the story is retold with the twisted expressions in the face of the story-teller, I thought to myself, you dont know the first thing about her life or what lead up to the circumstances that brought her to that well alone. I often wondered why I was so bothered by others using this woman to convey their well-intended messages of transformation. Then I had my own encounter with such a Man, and while not at a well, our lives were strikingly similar as I would come to find. There are the facts as spelled out in the truth of the Word, and just as Im certain Jesus saw the rest of the story, I hope to share some possibilities of this unnamed Samaritan woman and make some considerations of what might have been. Using this story as a backdrop, well encounter Five Transforming Truths which help us heal and transform in a similar way. We dont hear how the blind man whom Jesus gave sight, or men who were healed from their leprosy went on to live the remainder of their lives. Yet we do hear what must have transpired in the life of this Samaritan woman as many more believed because of what she shared. My inspiration and prayer is to use the story of this bad girl of the Bible, and share my own personal bad girl story. In doing so, I piece together what the Holy Spirit has revealed to me, conveyed in such a way as others, who have walked a crooked path, can gain freedom and deliverance from carrying their buckets of shame. Just as Jesus went out of His way to encounter this woman during a time of isolation, so too does He reveal Himself in our wounded, hidden moments.
